A SIM card, also called a subscriber identity module, is a wise card that stores identification information that pinpoints a smartphone to some specific mobile network. Data that SIM cards contain include user identity, location and call number, network authorization data, personal security keys, contact lists and stored text messages. Sims allow a mobile user to use this data along with the features that accompany them.

CDMA enabled phones do not require a SIM card; instead, the mobile device will use an electric serial number (ESN). Although carriers such as Sprint and Verizon do not require SIM cards, SIM cards are can still be within devices under those networks. The reason being cellular devices require usage of Sims to use 4G LTE.

A device called a SIM card reader may be used to upload data from the SIM card into a computer or another device.
